‘Sharks Plate Six Unanswered
(Camden, N.J., Jul. 31, 2010) - The Camden Riversharks defeated the Newark Bears 9-5 Saturday night at Campbell’s Field in Camden, New Jersey.
Newark jumped on the scoreboard in the visitor’s first. Kennard Jones, Elijah Dukes and Carl Everett recorded three straight hits, with Everett bringing in Jones on a RBI single. A wild pitch plated Dukes and the Bears had a 2-0 lead. Camden responded in the home half using a walk and two singles to load the bases. Garrett Guzman’s sacrifice fly and a RBI single off the bat of Vito Chiaravalloti tied the game.
Starters Shane Youman and Brad Knox each worked a scoreless second inning with Youman striking out a pair and stranding two and Knox picking up a strikeout and leaving one man on base. Dukes put the Bears back ahead in the third as he singled, stole second, moved up on a groundout and scored on a passed ball, all with just one out. The lead moved to three runs in next frame as Isaiah Kaaihue and Gabe Suarez reached on back-to-back errors to put runners on second and third. Pablo Ozuna ripped a two-run double into left-center field to give the Bears a 5-2 advantage.
Youman seemed to be cruising as he retired seven straight, including perfect frames in the third and fourth innings. The Sharks answered back in the fifth as after two singles and sacrifice bunt put runners in scoring position, Burgamy plated a run on a RBI groundout. Guzman followed with his second RBI and the game was tied for the second time, 5-5. Camden moved in front for the first time in the seventh on a Chris Malec RBI single. A RBI single by Burgamy and a Teuris Olivares two-run double padded the lead in the eighth.
Eddy Camacho (5-0) got the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings, with a walk and two strikeouts. Derek Blacksher (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs, two earned, and four hits, with three strikeouts in three innings of work. Youman tossed five innings, allowing four earned runs and seven hits, with six strikeouts in a no-decision. Knox, who also didn’t factor in the decision, worked six innings, giving up two earned runs and seven hits, and registered six strikeouts.
