BEARS MAKE A TRADE

Youman and Zimmermann Join Newark

(Newark, N.J., Jul. 21. 2010) – The Newark Bears announced today the addition of pitchers Shane Youman and Bob Zimmermann to the roster as part of a trade with the York Revolution.

Youman started his 2010 season in York where he amassed a 2-4 record with a 5.49 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 60.2 innings of work. The Louisiana native was acquired by the Revolution from Bridgeport via trade in June of 2009, and became one of the Revs’ most dependable starters, posting a 3.44 ERA. The reached the major leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2006 and 2007, and also pitched in the Atlantic League with Lancaster in 2008.

Zimmermann joins the Bears after collecting seven wins with a 4.43 ERA in 21 games (15 starts) with York. The St. Louis, Missouri native returned to York after going 6-4 with a 4.43 ERA in 2009 as he made 11 starts and 27 relief appearances. He also served as team closer in the middle of the season, notching eight saves. A former fourth-round draft pick of the Angels, Zimmermann has reached Double-A with the Angels, Yankees, and Cardinals organizations. He owns 54 career saves, including a career-best 24 with Cedar Rapids during the 2004 season. Zimmermann appeared in spring training with the Toronto Blue Jays this March, following his impressive showing with the Revs in 2009.

The Bears sent pitcher Vince Perkins to the Revolution to complete the trade. To make room on the roster, Newark placed pitcher Paul Fagan on the inactive list.
